I was lying under the trees behind our house where we’ve buried the ashes of the horse and pony we’ve had cremated (it’s more ashes than you can really scatter so we buried them) and a robin was hollering and shouting above me. I was thinking about how birds have been seen as messengers in a lot of cultures for their ability to cross between land, sky, and sea, and I thought maybe she wanted to take a message for me. So this was the message I told her for my girls.

The figure is based on a photo by Julia Margaret Cameron, and the foreground geometry is based on a wheat head (upside down), one of my touchstone symbols since growing up surrounded by, and riding in, the wheat fields where I grew up.
